I really don't think Sony knows wtf they are doing with that tier. They have WA1 and 3, but are missing 2.

Just got done with my nostalgia play of WA1 and had a good time with it.

Any chances they'll put this up. Maybe some news I didn't hear about, like issues with the emulator? Really strange omission and do we know if they'll have a September lineup? They just flat out skipped August.

Is X coming to playstation classics?

The answer is probably not, going by recent history.

But I feel your pain. WA2 is a classic.

  • #3
Yeah iirc it was on PSN via the old PS1 program so it should be on its way eventually. The only reason you're seeing this odd gap in titles is because the PS2 games are just the ones that were already on PS4 whereas the PS1 stuff needs repackaging under the new program.

Wild Arms 2 is becoming pretty pricey and hard to find on the eBay market. I snagged one for around $46 a while back.

There has to be some kind of a licensing issue with it. I remember that it does not have the best of translations and has some bugs.

I heard that there was a character that was altered due to the dodgey translation.

Here's to hoping it comes sooner than later. Especially if they already had it up and running for the ps3 emulator. Is that what you're referring to btw?

Would ps classics rereleases actually make changes like that though? It seems it's just higher resolution , faster loads and trophy support.

In general, anything Sony owns is more likely to show up in the Classics lineup, yeah. WA2 is pretty likely.

When, of course, is the bigger question. They aren't exactly moving quickly so far.

As for changes, no, they won't alter the translation or anything.

They would probably just leave it in. Just emulate it.

I'd love it to! But Sony seems to be really pushing hard for the classics lately! Really putting in the effort!

It should be very likely, but trying to figure out the logic of how Sony has done PS classic so far is a losing effort. I would say for your own sanity just expect it won't come for some inane reason and be surprised/happy if/when it does.

Honestly I think this whole classics initiative will be quietly cancelled and abandoned at some point by Sony, considering how poor it has been so far. It seems to be already heading that way with no releases in August.

Two months in and half the Classics are still just the ps2 to ps4 games that were already on PSN, now rebranded as Classics thinking noone would notice.

Then there was the whole PAL 50hz fiasco for Europe (they clearly didn't give a shit from the start and had people on it who knew nothing about how to handle older titles or care for any of it in terms of preservation). And now two just months in there isn't even a single new Classic release this month lol.

It is bound to show up.

If niche games like Badman showed up along with Intelligent Cube and such then I am sure this will come.

  • #15
Tombs too pls.

Also why haven't they released WA4 and WA5 as PS2 classics?

The translation was something else. I replayed it recently, and I still don't get some of the things happening because of it.

Brad punching things is always fun, though.

Probably, but if they're following nintendo's drip-feed approach to releasing legacy games then who knows when it's going to happen. It took them 2.5 years to put Earthbound on there after SNES became part of their online service.

What i did after the love Sony showed for their classics was that i charged my vita then bought the games i wanted (god of war collection, tomb raider 2, daxter, parasite eve) instead of waiting forever for them on their premium service.

WA2 is widely considered the black sheep of the series, but personally I have found memories of it. I thought it had better graphics than WA1, better music, more varied characters, more interesting villains (basically a small terrorist group instead of the usual evil demons or big empire, etc.). Of course the big flaw is the English translation.

Having never played any of the WA games, I heard that the games tend to get worse as they go on? Is 1 generally considered the best?

I like it more than 3 for some reason, but they're still not on par with 1.

The cynic in me believes they'll quietly kill it like they did the PS2toPS4 project. Gosh that still hurts. No announcement or anything, just....eventually nothing.

I'm HOPING not. I'm HOPING that with the extra funds they're seeing that they see some benefit of keeping classics going. Surely the delay of shutting down the PS3 store was due to them seeing an influx of classic purchases that they readjusted their expectations........

But......I just dunno lol

I can only speak for myself, but WA 1 is an amazing game and WA 2 is a snooze-fest with boring characters, terrible story, god awful localization, and the start of the dumbest world map gimmick. I think it's just awful, especially as a follow up to WA 1.

Honesty, the way it feels like PlayStation looks at their classic catalog, I would t hold my breath on anything specific coming to that Premium Classics catalog. The fact that they added nothing this month… welp

I have no faith in Sony doing anymore classics at this point. They even promised that PAL guys would get the NTSC versions and then went radio silent, like that initiative got scrapped

It really needs a new translation. The current one is hard to follow, and becomes nonsensical when the main threat is introduced.

I've been wondering the same. Only one in the series I haven't played yet. I bought WA1 and 2 off psn a long time ago and they'd just been sitting in my backlog, but being able to download 1 on PS5 with trophies finally got me to play it. Finished it a while ago and have been checking for 2 with every update. You wouldn't think it would be that difficult.

Regarding the translation comments... surely it isn't worse than 1's awkward translation, right? How would that even be possible...

Subscription model changes the entire conversation around these types of legacy programs, look at Disney+ as an example. No way in hell 90% of that old stuff shows up on blu-ray but they'll slap it on the service as a means to justify the monthly cost and keep generating revenue.

It is significantly worse. Like, whole sentences written by a guy who thought right-clicking every word and choosing "thesaurus" would make the script sound more profound than it actually was. It's one of the worst things I've ever read. Granted, I haven't read a ton but it's really terrible.

Edit: I remember 2 frequently recurring characters, Liz and Ard, who were made up entirely of Japanese quotes and idioms but were translated literally and they never made any sense. And the way main characters would say simple things like instead of "Why do you ask? I'm just happy" would turn into "Why the quandry? My panorama is jubilant in this moment" and you'd be like wtf why?

Dang... I thought 1's was pretty bad, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt for being old and the 1st in the series. It was certainly a refreshing reminder of how far localizations have come from those days lol.

Yeah that's something I should probably adjust my expectations about. PS2toPS4 were still digital purchases that they had to work on in hopes enough would actually buy in on. They want to keep people subbed so continuing to add to the classic library should make sense.

1 and 5 are good, but it kind of depends on what you're looking for.

1 is the best whole package, I think. The translation is a little stilted sometimes, but it's mostly decent. Good music, reasonably good Zelda-ish puzzles, battles get a little slow but the balance is pretty good.

2 is good mechanically but the plot is a mess, I think even if it were decently translated it would be hard to follow because there are so many crazy twists and weird mystical things going alongside the political machinations and nuclear weapon analogues.

3 is okay, but plays really slow. It has some pretty wild plot twists and good music though. Clive might be my favorite "adult character" in an RPG though, it's pretty wild to see a 30-something guy with a kid going out on adventures and being relatively put together (and seemingly a good dad).

4 has, bar none, the worst plot I've ever seen in a game, it's pretty much "kids are awesome and adults really suck" for 20 hours. The voice acting's decent, and the music's great, but the plot is awful and the mechanics feel kind of half baked, though it does get points for "most realistic and depressing RPG epilogue":

The main character becomes a park ranger.
The two older (18 and 19?) party members get married. The girl with a terminal illness who is your strongest party member by far? Yeah, they look for a cure together. She dies anyway.

5 reins in the "adults suck" narrative a bit (though not totally) and is a little more wild west and less sci-fi. It's one of the more interesting mechanically and it's a joy to explore and has lots of fun side content. One cool thing is that 5 has (tasteful) cameos of all the main characters from the rest of the series under different names, and uses them as fodder for sidequests. It's a fun treat for people who slogged through all (or some of) the games, and they don't feel out of place for new players.

There's also XF, the tactical RPG. I didn't play it long enough to say much about it, people who've played it more say it is really good. What I played felt a little too prescriptive ("use classes X Y and Z on these characters or fail the battle") but I assume it opens up later.

Finally there's Alter Code: F, a remake of 1 in 3's engine (on PS2). It's okay, I guess, but I'd play 1 first. ACF has a pretty bland (though not incomprehensible) translation, the music IMO isn't quite as good and the character balance and battling aren't very fun. Although it has a fantastic artbook, probably my favorite gaming-adjacent collectible.

Indeed. They should have been knocking it out of the park and adding value to Premium. Instead nothing. First impressions and all that. Sony isn't some little indie dev. They don't have a single excuse, but they do have people willing to look foolish defending them on the internet - so there's that!

I'm not saying the service hasn't been underwhelming, far from it. But let's keep some perspective while we keep Sony's feet to the fire. They have plenty of incentive to improve it, and it's only been 2 months. Literally zero reason for "it's dead already!" and "I bet they don't release any more classics!"

Wild Arms 2 is my most anticipated classic game that I want so badly on the PSN new service… I keep saying that in almost every tread related to the service.

Both WA1 and WA2 were part of the old PSN service on PS3…. So it only make sense for Sony to release WA2 sometime down the road since WA1 was already a launch classic title for the new service.

…… as long they don't pull Square Enix on us with their Star Ocean 1R and Star Ocean 2R situation -_-

I've paid for the service and I expect something in the classics range every month. Sony are making billions. Not even a tweet saying we are working on things. Sorry we didn't get anything out this month. Here's what we are doing going forward. We get nothing. It comes off as rude and disrepectful. And they keep doing this.

This to be honest.

They haven't demonstrated that the classics library is something that content will be constantly churned into, therefore there's no reason to anticipate anything at all.

Set expectations low, and cancel your premium sub if you're not using the cloud streaming.
